I'm wondering if the JD model 48 backhoe is a good investment and how much one can expect to pay to get one. I have a JD 4300 and would like to use the backhoe to remove stumps and dig some holes. Does anyone have something good or bad to say about the model 48? How much did you pay for it?Thanks-

I have a 48 on the back of a 4600. It is not a good investment but is a lot of fun. I have 15 acres of woods and right now I'm clearing a building site. In the Fall will use it to put in the foundation and septic field. Paid 30K for the whole thing, including 460 loader so I don't know exactly what the 'hoe went for..maybe 6.5K to 7K. Pulled everything from 6 inch pine to 20 inch maple stumps. You won't confuse this with a yellow excavator, but if you take your time and nibble around the edges you can pull anything out. My tractor is pretty heavy, maybe 6,000 lbs which helps when digging. The 4600 is a lot bigger than a 4300, I don't know if I would have as much success on a lighter tractor. The hoe will easily drag my tractor and lift it clear off the ground if I let it. ....

Greg, I also have a 48 on a 4600. How much? about 7500 less any discount you can arrange. I have both a 12" and a 18" bucket. I use the backhoe all the time. Remember to keep it lubed well (every 10 to 12 hrs.). For me it has been the single best tool on the tractor. Very easy and fast to remove and put on. Less than 3 min. to take off. The backhoe is well balanced and handles very well. It sets up on the job very fast and is a solid unit with the 4600. As for a good investment I can only speek for myself, and I give it a solid YES. ....
